Craftsmanship

ARTISANS

An endless devotion to craft has been a constant in Laings workshops since 1840. Nearly two centuries later, our goldsmiths and stone setters use craftsmanship techniques passed down through generations, combined with cutting-edge technology and innovation to create beautiful handcrafted fine jewellery.

GOLDSMITH

GORDON  HOWAT

With 47 years of experience in the industry, Gordon Howat specialises in jewellery restoration, giving beautiful pieces a new lease of life. Gordon’s career began with a five-year apprenticeship in Glasgow and after working on an array of pieces he understands the sentimental power that jewellery can have for many people. This knowledge drives him to create unique bespoke designs or reimagine heirloom pieces that can be cherished for generations to come.

There’s something magical about restoring an old piece of jewellery that people think isn’t capable of change. I enjoy the challenge of bringing it back to life, ready to be enjoyed for years to come.”

STUART THOMSON

Stuart Thomson’s natural skill was noticed over 40 years ago when he began an apprenticeship in a Glasgow workshop. Since then, he has been part of countless stories of creation and has crafted unique pieces of jewellery that are truly individual to the wearer. With a broad skill set, he is also a certified diamond grader, having been taught all about the intricacies of the gem by specialised tutors from Antwerp. Bespoke pieces have his heart, and he has created exquisite rings for members of the Laing family, crafting precious items that will be cherished for generations.

The presentation of a bespoke piece of jewellery is so special. It is a privilege to take clients on this journey of creation, crafting beautiful pieces that hold a unique sentiment for each individual.”

Here Emma learned how to use modern tools to execute traditional techniques. With her skills as an individual stone-setter in the team, there is a wealth of increased opportunities for bespoke design.

“What I love about being a goldsmith is that no matter how much you know, there is always something to learn. I absolutely love my job and I tell anyone who will listen how special it is that Laings has a dedicated department that possesses such rare skills.”

Her love of exquisite gemstones inspired her to further develop her craft, achieving an Applied Jewellery Professional diploma from GIA and working towards a Diamond Grading Accreditation, gaining a more in-depth appreciation and understanding of the unique gems.

“I love the problem-solving aspect of the job, finding creative solutions to unusual jobs that result in beautiful pieces of jewellery.”
